Evenings

"The ordinary arts we practice everyday at home are of more importance to the soul than their simplicity might suggest." Thomas Moore

13. "Daddy's HOME!!!"

14. Garlic, onions and olive oil sauteing in a pan.

15. A toddler happily eating his 'sgetti.

16. A husband who graciously takes over toddler taming when he is a not-so happy eater.

17. Grandma's tangy oil and vinegar recipe on crisp spinach salads.

18. Red wine served in wedding goblets.

19. Johnson and Johnson scented bubble baths and terry Thomas towels.

20. Joy! Naked joy of a two year old!

21. Stories...this week's favorite...Trashy Town.

22. "Daddy pick-a-up"....good night kisses in a blue race car bed.

23. A dog that promptly excuses herself at 8:30 pm and retires to her king-size bed.

24. Chamomile tea enjoyed in a butter yellow mug.

25. Crawling into lavender scented sheets next to the man I love.

26. Realizing that all I ever wanted in life is right here.

27. "MAMA!"....comforting terrified shouts in the middle of the night.

28. The warm breath and clinging embrace of my no-longer baby as I tuck myself in beside him.

29. Returning to a snoring dog who has selfishly stolen my spot.

30. Finally reclaiming my sleep for the night...maybe ...

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night.
Sailed off in a wooden shoe---
Sailed on a river of crystal light,
Into a sea of dew.
"Where are you going, and what do you wish?"
The old moon asked the three.
"We have come to fish for the herring fish.
That live in this beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we!"
Said Wynken, Blynken, And Nod.

Home Life

What you do in your house is worth as much as if you did it up in heaven for our Lord God. We should accustom ourselves to think of our position and work as sacred and well-pleasing to God, not on account of the position and work, but on account of the word and faith from which the obedience and the work flow.
—Martin Luther

Mornings

"Why sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass

1. Silence and stillness of early morning devotional time.

2. Coffee brewing in a husband crafted kitchen.

3. White fluffy robes and fuzzy socks.

4. The quiet drive to the gym...early morning workouts...alone and unsociable.

5. Footsie jammies and two year old morning breath.

6. Toddler cracked eggs and crispy bacon.

7. Moose-ka (Mickey Mouse) shaped pancakes served on a Tonka plate.

8. Imaginary eggs prepared in a toddler sized kitchen.

9. The obsessive anticipation that only a Labrador can create....waiting for her daily scrambled egg.

10. The anxious peeping of brand-new baby birds nesting on our front door...calling eagerly for their mama.

11. A shaving game played between a boy and his daddy.

12. Lunches prepared and sent off for a hard working husband.

13. A chance for a new day...

Oh, God, give me grace for this day.

Not for a lifetime, nor for next week, nor

for tomorrow, just for this day.

Direct my thoughts and bless them,

Direct my work and bless it.

Direct the things I say and give them blessings, too.

Direct and bless everything that I think and speak

and do. So that for this one day, just this one

day, I have the gift of grace that comes from your

presence.

Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy- Breathnach

Gratitude Journal

Research says...

"At the end of the 10 weeks, participants who’d kept a gratitude journal felt better about their lives as a whole and were more optimistic about the future than participants in either of the other two conditions. To put it into numbers, according to the scale we used to calculate well-being, they were a full 25 percent happier than the other participants. Those in the gratitude condition reported fewer health complaints. People who kept a gratitude journal reported feeling more joyful, enthusiastic, interested, attentive, energetic, excited, determined, and strong than those in the hassles condition. They also reported offering others more emotional support or help with a personal problem— supporting the notion that gratitude motivates people to do good. And this was not limited to what they said about themselves. We sent surveys to people who knew them well, and these significant others rated participants in the gratitude group as more helpful than those in the other groups."

Why the push?

My shameless justifications that I will not be scarring my child for life by not putting him in a traditional preschool. A preschool education devoid of the letter of the week, flannel boards and circle time.
